Organize the Pantry

A pantry shelf filled with various food items including boxed crackers, canned goods, a jar, a container of baking powder, and small bowls, with some items stored in plastic bags and a black plastic basket.
A woman with shoulder-length blonde hair, wearing a gray long-sleeve shirt and blue jeans, opening a pantry door and holding a bag of Pearl Milling Company toaster waffles.
A set of four clear glass jars with wooden lids and metal handles, varying in size, arranged on a neutral surface.
Three clear glass jars with black lids labeled 'Pantry Essentials All Natural', containing oats, flour, and sugar, on a white shelf with a wooden scoop and a bottle in the background.
Empty white walk-in closet with shelves and rods, construction dust on the floor, and an unfinished wall at the top.

For containers, the client chose wide Rowan Acacia Stacking bins, Anchor Hocking Montana Jars with Matte Black Lids, and Gold Serena Stamped Metal Bins, both wide and narrow. (all from The Container Store) We used her black baskets for larger items to sit on the floor and condensed her food storage to one shelf that was easily accessible. Grandkids’ meals always go back and forth from their house to home!

The pantry needed an update as the painted shelves were scratched and yellowed. I advised that we paint the shelves and the pantry walls to match the kitchen and living room areas, next to the pantry.

The Install

The client loves to cook and wanted a sophisticated pantry that fit the overall style of her entire house. Making the pantry a dedicated pantry seemed like a good decision. The rarely-used glass vases and various kitchen appliances were moved to another storage area.

All the baking items are put in one container, all the pastas in one area, breakfast cereals together, all the grandkids’ snacks together. Once we put bulk items in jars, there is a ton of visible space in the pantry.

When you take foodstuffs out of boxes, and internal bags, much of the volume in the pantry is vastly reduced. Bulk items such as nuts, cereals, and rices can easily be grabbed. I labeled a few key items that they use on a daily basis.
